4G Capable Intercom for 15 apartment complex in Melbourne
We were contacted by the committee of an apartment complex in Melbourne looking for an intercom system to control their front gate. They had an existing analogue system in the foyer of the building but it was too old to be extended and they didn’t want to re-cable and replace the whole system.
The customer was looking for a video intercom with access control (PIN code, RFID card, and Smartphone App) to be mounted on a front fence with a busy footpath. They also wanted full video intercom features such as remote unlock, touchscreen monitor in every apartment, and management of the system.
The final solution was an Akuvox system consisting of a, Apartment door station X912S with rain hood, an industrial 4G router, 15 Akuvox C313W touch screen monitors with WiFi, and 15 monitor stands for the apartments, and 15 SmartPlus App licences and 1 SmartPlus Property Manager Licence. Performance of the 4G Capable System
The 4G router connects to the Telstra mobile broadband network and has 99.9% uptime. Remote monitoring and logging of the system ensures fast response if any issues. Watchdog function reboots the router if detection to the internet is lost.
Call time and connection to the door X912S through the monitor or App is as fast as a cabled system. Having both indoor monitor and the App provides full intercom functionality without requiring a SmartPhone and prevents issues with intercom calls while on phone calls etc. The constant updates to SmartPhones by manufacturers can lead to issues while App development catches up to latest SmartPhone security features. Having the touch screen monitor ensures there is always a connection to the apartment. The touch screen monitor is also ideal where tenants may be unfamiliar with technology as it is easy to operate and requires no installation or maintenance of software unlike a SmartPhone.

Expansion
An additional door station was added inside the lobby of the complex. This linked into the existing system and all configuration automatically transferred for plug and play installation.
A CCTV camera was added overlooking the carpark. The camera and additional door station were integrated to the 4G router through an outdoor managed PoE switch. This allows remote monitoring of all systems for easy maintenance.
Residents now can monitor their carpark via a smartphone App and playback events stored on an SD memory card. The management system for the intercom system stores all door station access and calls with snapshots of the visitor for security purposes.
The property manager has full control via an online Web portal.
