Advantage of EnGenius phones compared to DECT or Wi-Fi portable phones

The EnGenius phone range uses the 900MHz frequence band for communication.  DECT phones operate in the 1.9GHz spectrum and Wi-Fi utilises 2.4GHz and 5GHz.  The lower frequency of the EnGenius phones results in greater distance and better penetration through walls and other obstacles. 

Depending on the model, EnGenius phones can penetrate up to 12 floors of a multi-storey building and travel up to 10kms.

A typical DECT or Wi-Fi phone is limited in distance and coverage and if using Wi-Fi is competing with everyday Wi-Fi network traffic and interference.

Longer distance, less interference and congestion, greater obstacle penetration, results in clear, long distance communication.

EnGenius long range cordless phones are available as Industrial or Office / Residential.  They are designed for standard phone line / PBX and also for VoIP / SIP systems (IP PBX or Cloud PBX).  Analogue and SIP versions are not interoperable.

EnGenius long range cordless phones are available with single line and multi-line support and also with multiple handsets in expandable systems.

Durafon Analogue

DuraFon Analogue is available in single and multi-line systems (Base) and these systems can be expanded by increasing the number of Bases.  The Base will have a level of capability as well (see table below) that when paired with a handset will ultimately define the system capability.

An Analogue system is suited to where there are standard analogue phone lines.  These would be used where there is a PBX or ATA with standard lines (or even an NBN router with phone port) and provide standard phone call capability.

DuraFon Base are available as 1 line (DuraFon PSL) or 4 line systems (DuraFon PRO).  Each Base can connect up to 9 Analogue handsets for the PSL Base (maximum of 4 Base / 36 handsets in 1 system, 4 lines), or 8 Base, 90 handsets, 32 lines with the Pro multi-Base.   It is possible to have more handsets than lines in which case the handsets are part of a group for calls.

Durafon SIP

DuraFon SIP is available in multi-line systems (Base) and multi-Base systems. These systems can be expanded by increasing the number of Bases when the multi-Base system is chosen.  The Base will have a level of capability as well (see table below) that when paired with a handset will ultimately define the system capability.  The SIP Bases support an Analogue line per Base as well as 10 SIP lines per Base.  A multi-Base system can be expanded to 10 Base with 10 Analogue line and 100 SIP handsets.

A SIP system is suited to where there is an IP PBX or a Cloud PBX system.  Modern phone systems and the NBN generally use SIP (VoIP) for calls and unified communications.  

DuraFon handsets.

DuraFon handsets must be the correct technology for the Base i.e. Analogue or SIP.  They will not work with other handsets or Base that are not the same technology.

DuraFon handsets can also work in broadcast mode where a message is broadcast in one direction to particular or all handsets.  This is ideal for PA type messaging or where information is conveyed without requiring a response.

DuraFon handsets can also work handset to handset without the Base.  This feature provides private 2-way communications between handsets and can even be used when away from the Base or site: an example would be where a number of users travel off site but need a form of communication (even where there is no mobile coverage).  Ideal for school excursions for example. 

DuraFon handsets can be associated with a phone extension including as a group where an incoming call rings multiple handsets.  This works well for calls to a business department where multiple staff members can answer the call.  Calls can be transferred between handsets if required as well as a host of other standard phone features.

Multiple SIP Bases vs Multibase ‘S’ SIP Base

Standard SIP Bases can be operated together on the one system.  There are 2 types of Base: Standard and Multibase ‘S’

Mutibase ‘S’:  Multibase ‘S’ systems use frequency synchronisation to manage calls with an ‘S’ series system.  This allows multiple Base to install antennas within 1 meter of each other and enables direct paging and other features on handsets on different Bases.  Essentially it becomes one managed larger Base system with full Base side functionality vs a standard Base system where handsets on different Base use the PBX functionality for inter handset functions.  You must use Series ‘S’ handsets with ‘S’ series Base.

Standard Base:  Each Base antenna must be 10m apart to reduce interference.  You must use standard handsets with standard Base.  Recommended to use ‘S’ series where multiple Base required

If you will require multiple Bases we recommend choosing the Multibase ‘S’ systems for streamlined operations, less interference on the system, and simplified antenna mount arrangement.

Which EnGenius System is right for me?

EnGenius systems are defined in 2 ways: Office / Industrial (how rugged the components are), and Analogue / SIP (the call signaling and voice modulation method).  Within Analogue / SIP are the Base types and number of lines each Base provides.  For Analogue Base you have 1 line or 4 line versions, for SIP they are all 10 SIP line including 1 standard PSTN line for DuraFon SIP.
