Multi-featured IP SIP Video Intercom
A property developer customer was seeking a new solution for their gated communities. Previous estates used a private cable network to provide telephony, video (Free to air TV, Pay TV, and surveillance), access control, and broadband to homes and between nodes (front gate, TV Head End, surveillance cameras etc).
Many years of maintenance issues had impacted on the reliability of the network and a new solution was sought.
A review of the requirements established that the original desire for TV distribution was essentially to remove TV antennas from homes in the estate. When this was re-evaluated against the costs of maintenance and the head end, TV antennas were no longer unacceptable.
Telephone and broadband was also removed from the developers ongoing responsibility with home owners entering into their own arrangements using standard telephone lines or NBN as applicable.
This left access control, intercom, and surveillance cameras as the requirements of a private network. The network was to be a standard IP network capable of integrating standards based equipment now and in the future. A secure wireless point to multipoint network would provide the backbone for all services within the community.
The properties under development were gated communities with video surveillance around the perimeter and at selected shared use facilities. Access to the community was via a gate that could be remotely controlled by residents via a small portable RF sender or by residents in their homes through an intercom panel. Visitors would call the residents via an access panel and the resident would identify the visitor by high resolution video and grant access. The system would store a snapshot of the visitor (day or night) for later retrieval if required.
After evaluating many systems on the market a feature list for the new intercom system was decided:
- Full colour high resolution video
- Large colour touch screen
- SIP based to integrate into SIP telephony system
- High quality manufacture of components
- Remotely accessible for management and maintenance
- Standard IP based system for integration into ethernet based networks
- Configurable interface to suit application
After extensive testing and evaluation it was decided to import a system that met all the above requirements with the added features of in-built alarm system, home automation, multi-media player, and storage for photos, music, and movies. When combined with a management system that included remote alarm management, push messaging, push advertising, and swipe card management, the choice was made simple.
